Ooh! I have apologized in the past. But I did stop. I got sick of apologizing to the air really. You make a very good point that it sounds unprofessional. Great post! I wish I had more to say about it, but I agree with everything you wrote and I'm going to try to make a mental note of it in case I ever do it again. :)
