Thankyou for highlighting the benefits of ABA. Applied Behavioural Analysis is the essence of what you describe above.

I'm sorry you are upset by this thread and so may not read my comment to you. But I would ask you to consider how your interpretation of what is being said above is affecting how you feel, and then understand that when parents read comments attacking their perspective and questioning their love for their children they too find it deeply upsetting. The feelings are the same. And so are the reactions. A desire to retreat from the online community.

My son bangs his head occasionally too. Though less so these days and certainly not to the extent mentioned above. (Incidentally my son's uncle is a drummer in a metal band :)

I thought this piece was a beautifully timed juxtaposition against the post below. Our kids are not always happy, just like any of us. But the extreme ways in which our children's unhappiness can manifest is a valid concern for any loving parent who must struggle to manage the risks inherent in such acts of self harm.

It's 'piggy' who gets lost at our place (for last 6 years). We almost lost him permanently once while on holiday. My daughter seemed to cope better than anticipated with his loss, and hubby and I were relieved to see him gone. Then just as we were leaving the country town we'd been staying in we stopped off at the local bakery to grab some snacks, and there was 'piggy' behind the counter, waiting for us to take him home. Fuck it!!!

Thanks Brenda, I think you make some really good points. I would like to see in these discussions some acknowledgment of the biology of stress, particularly chronic stress. Many parents had pre existing anxiety or depressive disorders before kids, so may have not started with the kind of emotional resilience required to stay afloat emotionally while dealing with their child's more challenging behaviours. Or like me may have developed post natal anxiety or depression if their child as a baby was particularly difficult.

I think how we choose to think about autism absolutely informs our ability to manage the more stressful moments we can encounter as parents. But that some of us are also struggling with psychological/ emotional issues that are driven by biological response to stress that wont be addressed by attempts to simply think differently. Some amongst us will need additional supports via therapy or medication and additional community resources such as quality respite. I think when you put these tangible strategies in place alongside your argument for acceptance of autism then we really get somewhere.

I totally get this. I'd think about it as giving you the space necessary to create a new battle plan.

I want to yell "RUN, don't do this to yourself". But I know it doesn't help. So I wish you wisdom and serenity in whatever decision you make xx
