I'm a small press author in YA and romance. My publishers have my books are available on the Nook. I tried to support my local Barnes and Noble and offered to do an author talk about ebooks last xmas when everyone was receiving Nooks. Barnes and Noble was extremely rude to me and scoffed at my small presses and there was never any talk or event set up. I really have a hard time getting behind them when I don't receive support as an author. Don't they need ebooks to sell their Nooks? My books on Amazon far outsell my books on Nook.

This is a great post! Thanks so much for sharing it! Recently, one of our local high schools showed support for a young, eight year old girl who was accidentally shot at another school. The teens coordinated a Monday where they would all wearing purple--her favorite color. The teens at the high school understood about violence at school because one of their classmates had been stabbed in the school bathroom in the Fall. I think teens have a lot more empathy than we give them credit for. Here is the article about the teens: http://www.heraldnet.com/article/20120308/NEWS01/...

I teach a class for educators, "Excellence in Children's Literature." As a part of the class, teacher students have to access the award lists--everything from Alex Awards to Printz to Newbery. I have a list of links on my blog. (www.mindyhardwick.wordpress.com), set up for them. This new policy of having to log in gives an added step for them. In a time when so many school librarians are being cut, or decreased in hours, it's invaluable that the teachers know where and how to find these lists. I'm always surprised when so many of them tell me they had no idea so many awards existed and that they could access them so easily.
