I've always wanted to read Australian literature. This would be a very good starting point for me. It sounds intriguing, especially the life of convict and raising an intersexed child.

I finished Soul Mountain with a mind full of questions. The book, written by Gao Xingjian who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, is completely told in alternating 1st- and 2nd- narratives. Two perspectives intersperse in a novel that has no linear plot. The only clue as to the relation between the two narratives is the narrator, who is omniscient. I'm not peevish about this technique, but it does confuse me until when I figured out that 2nd person narrative is an alter ego.

I think crappy doesn't always mean bad. bad book is one that is poorly written. Crappy can be cheesy. I think I'll know a bad book when I read one, and might very well abort it for another (better) book. :)

Your post puts a smile on me when I read the title. Last year I decided that for 2010 I would take a sabbatical from reading challenges to focus on what I wanted to read. The one reading plan, which I didn't consider a challenge, because it was a sketch of reading ideas with no deadline, I participated was Reading Deliberately. A little over halfway of this year I have brainstormed my own reading plan for 2011, which will focus on 20th century literature by "outmoded" authors. Anyway, I congratulate you on making the decision to abstain from challenges. You'll enjoy the freedom by which you can read what you like without the time pressure. :)

I felt the pressure of keeping up with everything that goes on the community. But that's just impossible! A meme here and there would be fun, but if there is one area I'm completely committed to, that would be my book reviews. Do what you enjoy doing. :)

I am anxious to read this one as well, but like any book that has stirred up hype, I am saving it until the paperback comes out. I'm sorry it wasn't better for you.
