Great tips, and I really like what Spinak said of what he gets out of it all. Completely agree.

And 3%? Wow. I remember a YA author asking her blog readers how many had actually read her book, and it was less than 30%, and I thought that was low. Even though I hadn't read it, either. She was a great blogger, but I just wasn't interested in that story. But I did read her second book!

About the newsletter, if you're apprehensive about sending it out, you probably don't have to worry about it. It's those who think their newsletter is the best thing ever that get a little trigger happy.

And about Quinn's book, last week I went out of my way to visit a bookstore I'd never been to before, and her book was right on the corner of the first table as you come in the door. Almost got it just to reward myself for being there. :-)

He mentioned Tolstoy, which reminds me of his story "After the Ball."

Other favorites would be a good deal of Ray Bradbury and Jack London, including his "War," which reads like Hemingway before Hemingway.

I’m gradually accepting the label, but more as a diagnosis than something I’ve achieved. : p

This makes me wish I'd kept in touch with Suzanne Collins, from back when we were working the rodeo circuit. : p

But really, your tips apply to life as much as promotion. If you help someone move, or look after their kid for a day, it's a lot easier to find help when you need a hand. In fact, you might not even need to ask.

I think "tears streamed down my cheeks" is used a lot 'cause it sounds good, with all that rhyming. And I forget where, but I recently read someone describe crying by simply saying, "Everything blurred."

And amen to the power of short words. Or rather, your elucidation of the beneficial economy of prose brought about a scriptural affirmation from my cognitive awareness. : p

I haven't spent much time there 'cause you can't read excerpts, but it's time I found out what it has to offer, so thanks for the nudge.

Oh, that's one of my favorite Christmas specials. It was on just once or twice when I was a kid, and then didn't see it again for like ten years, until cable arrived, which reassured me I hadn't been imagining it.

Happy New Year!

Awesome review. Schafer linked to it in her blog, but I didn't finish the book till now, and you really covered it all well and nailed what I appreciated about it as well - especially the grey moral ground and how the world building doesn't tell you anything you don't need to know.

What a recommendation for Rushdie (though I should've known he was cool if he hangs out at U2 concerts). Off to check out this guy.
