#6 reminded me of an odd coincidence in American history. In 1847, the Mormons were forced out of the state of Illinois by heavy persecution. They had previously been forced out of Missouri by an extermination order by the governor. Besides the rarity of the religious expulsion from the supposedly free American states (from a worship standpoint at least), the story has one additional, truly unique twist. During their migration to what is now the state of Utah but was then Mexico, the United States was fighting against Mexico in a war and the US requested that the Mormon pioneers provide some manpower in that war. Amazingly the Mormons complied and those volunteers became, to the best of my knowledge, the first and only soldiers to ever fight on behalf of a country they were fleeing out of against the country they were fleeing into, and even more peculiar, in a conflict that would eventually result in the territory they were fleeing into becoming part of the territory they were fleeing out of.
