My daughter will be five next year too (end of June) and will be starting school the year after. I'm pretty sure it's the right decision even though with the cut off being end of July she could start next year. I think academically she'd cope fine but socially I think, as you said, being older will help.

I just told my work last month that I'm not coming back after my 12 months leave. It was scary! They were fine with it, and really, they've been without me for a year, they can obviously manage. I think part of my nervousness was for the same reason you mention - not having the safety net. I was relieved once I had told them though. It was done, decision made, move on! Good luck, I'm sure they will understand, and you're perfectly within your rights to change your mind. (Oh, and I was nervous telling them I was pregnant too.)
