"I was told that I looked much older than fifteen, only by men, only during their confusing flirtations. I may have. I dyed my long hair dark and wore more makeup than was necessary; in some ways, this was a life I invited on myself."

A one-two punch of recognition and sadness.

My supervisor commutes from one state capital to another (not bicoastal though) and every time he apologises for not answering my email over the weekend I just want to shout "OMG YOU HAVE KIDS IGNORE MY FLAILING FOR THE 48 HOURS YOU ARE AT HOME". I don't, because that would be weird, so I'm just trying not to flail over the weekend about anything.

I cope with it by having naturally ridic hair, so odd short bits poking through doesn't make much of a difference!

Depends on hair type - I've got wild hair so it worked for me http://instagram.com/p/cU6XPtkpo3/ and http://instagram.com/p/cU6XPtkpo3/ (one day and the next) and my daughter has insanely thick straight hair and it worked for her http://instagram.com/p/fyax7hEpku/ and http://instagram.com/p/ft5nJEkpm2/

That said, when it's really short it's like velcro.

I would put it at better than 90% of Dan Savage myself.

Not the same, but similar enough. I've tried to explain the bodily effects of recovery as "I get so uptight I can't fart for Christ's sake!" - but nobody has ever really gotten it, or understood.

I think it's super important how we react when the kid is outed as a liar as well - it's not a good thing to do, but they're not a bad person. So the strawberry situation I'm generally like "really, the strawberries just up and disappeared and now you've got strawberry all over your face?" and by that stage kiddo is snickering at me and fesses up and I say "please tell me the truth, it's important" and that's it. Maybe a discussion about why she shouldn't have eaten an entire punnet of strawberries in a sitting as well (they were for cakes, your poop will turn pink, and so on).

"People will talk to you about this who irritate you so much they constipate you. You Grip My Shit is a real thing. You will take psyllium husks and move on as best you can."

Ugh. The recognition. I am so sorry.

My fave was spin pins, into a low side bun. Followed by crown braids to distribute weight. But I did love the partially shaved bit because it lessened the weight a lot and made it easier to deal with.

Mind you, this is my hair during the 'so fucking long what the hell it's caught in my armpit' era.
