Ohhhh so glad this exists!

A friend and I are starting up a humor site called Excuse the Bananas; it isn't up and running yet but we've currently set a launch date of June 1! For all you other hilarious people, we will definitely be seeking submissions. The Twitter (@excusethebanana) and Facebook pages are up but not active yet — feel free to follow those. Instagram and Tumblr and Snapchat will be up as well but we haven't done more than reserve them at this point. You can follow now, but it will be kind of boring for a few more weeks. All the other usernames/urls are /excusethebananas.

My personal Twitter is @reporterrrr and I would love to keep up these Toastie circles there!

So true about the cultural expectation of visibility. And if anything, that's honestly even more a reason why there should be diversity in author appearance. Audiences (especially, ESPECIALLY young audiences since we're talking YA) should be able to see that authors (like characters, ideally) don't have to look any one way. Plus, just because an author (or anyone, really) isn't conventionally attractive doesn't mean that they can't connect to an audience! Whaaaaat even is that argument.

(Disclaimer: the parts I'm having issue with are from the original article, not from your comment! Just wanted to clarify so that my sarcasm doesn't come across as directed toward you)

"There are ways to colonize and destroy on this island without having to kill each other or, ugh, leave this room," said the general, reaching for Settlers of Catan.

Maybe it's just supposed to be a subtle reminder of the constant presence of masculinity.

My favorite part of the first picture is how the tie draped on the mirror conveniently covers the reflection of her nipple. I'd like to imagine that the thought process there while setting up the mirror was something like, "Our contract says we can allow three boobs to be shown in some form, but NONE OF THEM can be completely exposed. Okay, we've got one side-boob, one cut off by the mirror, but dammit what are we going to do about that full reflection? Got it. Larry, give me your tie, we're gonna pretend it matches the color scheme. Ugh, next time let's just go with the three-boobed woman in the standard two-boob bikini."

It in fact felt quite normal at the time! It was the first time I ever realized that someone was flirting with me to my face (I was 24), and I didn't know how to handle the situation, so socializing with chickens instead of socializing with boy seemed like an obvious response.

(I then went on to date that boy for four months because I figured I might as well. It was not a terrible experience but was the wrong thing to do because we were not well-suited to each other, and I blame the chickens for not warning me away from that mediocre relationship.)

Yes, we were raising chicks and they were still in the "keep in a box under a heat lamp" phase.

"Excuse me, I must go upstairs and tend to the chickens in the spare bedroom" —an actual thing that I have said and then followed through on in order to escape the attentions of a flirt
