Holy crap, I totally read that when I was a preteen and haven't thought about it in years! That was an intense one to read at age 13 (but good).

I Capture the Castle. It gets more perfect every time I read it, somehow.

Also The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. Now I gotta go re-read this immediately.

Agree on everything about this for A Tree Grows in Brooklyn!

I've also reread Betty Smith's "Joy in the Morning" a bunch and found it similarly powerful - I always thought of it as what happens to Francie's sister Annie Laurie when she is older (though it's not, even though the main character is also named Annie).

So good. Have you also read the companion/sequel Rose Under Fire? It is also so good but even sadder, if that's possible.

That is EXACTLY what happened to me. I did finish the 2nd book, but was so pissed about what the author did with Julia's story arc that I had no desire to read the 3rd.

I felt really disappointed that the whole book is leading up to finding out what she's been through, and then it was like, "oh you couldn't think of anything more nuanced or interesting than rape?" Meh.

That rape scene article is basically the one I wanted to write after finishing "The Magician King."
