Well, I did lots of self-monitoring (gave away my copy of The Giver once I read about Jonas's sexual stirrings only to repurchase a used copy to then give away again; stopped reading Robin McKinley's Hero and the Crown when I realized she was having sex; this happened a lot).

My mom wouldn't let me read BSC because Mary Anne had a boyfriend or SVH because they were about girls and boys dating, and she thought Rebecca looked too much like a romance novel for me to read when I was 12 (even though one of my teachers suggested I read it). And she wouldn't let me read Jane Eyre until I was 14 because she thought it was too mature.

The Alanna books were so central to my childhood (I was just thinking of this recently, and also thinking of what a great heroine and role model she was for me - angry, transgressive, and fiercely loyal. I love her still). I also remember really liking some of Robin McKinley's heroines, too.

Anyway, thanks for writing this.

YES! I loved those. Dicey rocked. I remember the boat building and like ... incredibly poetic passages about the texture and color of wood, or something? At least that's what I'm remembering. Ugh, I want to re-read those.

A THING OF BEAUTY AND A JOY FOREVER

No one ever needs to watch Calamity Jane again. They can just watch this, and maybe also listen to the song "A Woman's Touch."

Yep, same here (after Mary Martin in NBC's Peter Pan). Was totally obsessed with Dr. Quinn at that age, too? The theme song still makes me teary.

I quote this skit every time I am sick and it makes me a delight to be around, I'm sure.

Bahaha. I'm so amused that you're teaching a class on shipping - may it help students start shipping to their heart's content and bring them into the world of FANFICTION! (My fave.) I think Ron/Hermione was actually the first ship I ever sought out fanfiction for - though I quickly dropped them as a ship and made more dubious shipping choices (Snape/Hermione! Draco/Ginny) they'll always be my first.
