I'm a GenEd teacher and the mother of a SPED kid, and yeah, this is perfect advice. Any teacher worth their shit will know what's on a kid's IEP or 504 and will try their damndest to do everything necessary to help a kid, but the reality is, they're doing this based on some shit written on a piece of paper and a brief conversation with the resource teacher (if they've even been given a minute to do that much). I actually like it when a parent will contact me and say, "Hey. I'm ____ and my kid is _____. Nice to meet you. Listen, I know you're super busy and such, but I thought I'd drop you a line and let you know some helpful things about my kid you may not have gleaned from the IEP or resource meeting. S/he does best with _____ and really loses his/her shit with ______." And I say, "Thank you, _____. That really IS helpful. Now I know some things that will help me help your kid. Wins all around." Good stuff.

I can't watch the video. My son has cerebral palsy. From the moment we found out he had a stroke in utero and would suffer from lifelong disabilities, I have worried tremendously about how others will treat him. Worried. Cried. Prayed. Felt isolated. Felt sad. Felt like I wanted to shield him from the world. I can say that I agree with your sentiments about this or any other word: " it's not about one group of people trying to rule over another one, it's just about not being an asshole". That's it. Plain and simple. And like you, I believe people who use that word hurtfully are assholes. Big, huge, selfish assholes. And no amount of "It's my right to say this shit" and "But I'm protected by the constitution" or "Blah blah pontificate blah blah" will change it. In fact, that only makes a person an even greater asshole. And I'd rather have nothing to do with them. I only wish I could filter life like a Twitter feed.

I can't, can't, CAN'T even imagine what a basket case I will be when both my boys go to middle school -- my special needs kid as well as my "normal" one. Both carry torches that attract the pounders. I'm more concerned that, on top of the anxiety, I might kill a mufuka if s/he even THINKS about making fun of my children. From one neurotic to another, woo-sa.
