I was also very annoyed that our house couldn't possibly have been haunted by previous owners and the tragic events of years past because we bought it brand-new and it had been finished maybe three weeks before we moved in.

Plus it was a tract home in central California and kinda lacking in Gothic mystery.

I downloaded a PDF of the Green Book several years ago and discovered that one of the locations for the four restaurants listed in Albuquerque still housed a restaurant, but it was now one of the fanciest in all of ABQ. Relevant, somehow.

The scene from the Casa della Pietra living room when Nikki tweeted that horrible cartoon:

Me: *staring openmouthed in horror*
Mr. Pietra: *walks into room* Hey, what's wrong?
Me: *continues to stare in openmouthed horror*
Mr. Pietra: Honey??
Me: Uh. Someone is horrible on the Internet?
Mr. Pietra: To you?
Me: No, to Nikki from the Toast. *proceeds to give thumbnail description of #WhitewashedOut and cartoon*
Mr. Pietra: Dear God.
Me: Yes. Have some coffee before you see this.
Mr. Pietra: Will do.
*schlorp*
Mr. Pietra: WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE.

Dragonsdawn is not so bad by Pern standards, but there's some seriously skeevy stuff in the earlier books about consent and the lack thereof when dragons or fire lizards mate and their riders/owners end up getting dragged along emotionally and sexually.  It's very similar to a lot of awful '70s rape fantasy romance fiction, which makes sense given when McCaffrey wrote the earlier novels.  I also wish I'd gotten some better lessons about sex and sexuality, especially because I spent so much time reading all of those books and hoovering up notions about Sex is Okay if You Don't Have the Capacity to Say Yes Because Then You Aren't To Blame.

I just checked, and Margaret Atwood published her first novel when she was 30. So you've still got time!

The depressing part about that is that the Actual Sex in that book is actually Attempted Unsuccessful Sexual Assault.

When I learned much later in life that many V.C. Andrews books were ghostwritten (at this point, I believe more have been authored by the ghostwriter than by the original author), it all made perfect sense.
