Well done, Fiona. Your reading is more diverse than mine. I've been staying away from non-fiction which is not good. A nice list of books. I like Bel Canto a lot!

I think that commenting more is key. I have a set "band of brothers" and I always comment on their stuff. I do find it a bit difficult commenting on blogs outside that group. I'm getting better at it. I've reorganized my Google Reader and I try and leave a comment at least once every two weeks on the blogs that I follow. I tend to lurk more on Twitter but I find I get more commenters or followers when I come out and join a twitter conversation. I'm a straight up lit fiction person with a huge slant towards world literature. So I occupy a really tiny tiny niche of the book blogosphere but I don't mind it as much. I hope you find an answer for it's great having you around. All the best.

No, No, no, you have every right to be upset. Every right. The desecration of these site, which we should treasure, has two causes, I think. One touches on what you wrote: The Ghanaian appreciation of slavery. The history and the shame of slavery, our shame at our role, has been successfully wiped from our history and our collective national consciousness. Like the girl said, it was such a long time ago, why dredge it up? That's the attitude. It's the wrong attitude but it's self-serving. We don't have to deal with nor come to an understanding of our role in the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade.

The other reason is bureaucratic sloppiness and blockheadedness. You know, The Museum folks don't understand the not so subtle difference between preserving a monument on one hand and totally destroying it on the other hand while at the same time making sure that the monument pays for its preservation etc. So in typical Ghana fashion, the symbolic meaning of the fort will be lost because we want to attract tourist. Oh, I failed to mention that we don't have an understanding of how tourism works. The whole thing is a shame.

Rant on. I'm listening. And thank you.

I think you guys have covered the field. If drama is allowed, then I would suggest The Marriage of Anansewa and Edufa, both by Efua Sutherland and also Anowa by Ama Ata Aidoo. Oh, for the novels, Search Sweet Country by Kojo Laing
