I am sending you all the love in my heart and all the love in the world. I am SO PROUD of you - as much now as I was last year. This conversation continues to be important.

My best to you, precious, and to your dear family. Keep being amazing. <3 <3 <3

It was so nice seeing you there! I have to say I was floored by that event - both by the depth of talent on the stages (both local and national), but also with the vigor and interest and size and diversity of the attendees. Students and teachers, writers and librarians, a gazillion teens, all hobnobing and enthusing about books. It truly was amazing.

You know, one of the kindest responses I ever got to my query was "Right writer, wrong book. Write me the right book and I'll probably represent you." Sometimes we work hard and sometimes we do everything right, but the book is still wrong. And there's nothing for it but to put it aside, and write something new. I will never sell that wrong book - and thank god I won't. But I took her advice. I wrote a new book, and both representation and a pretty nice sale followed shortly after. Sometimes, leaving a book behind ends up setting us free.

Steve, your "bag of dicks" reference is just further proof that you are secretly my long-lost identical twin. That is all.

I can't do this either. Like at all. The last time someone asked me what my book was about, I said, "I have no effing idea, but will you please read it and tell me." And I was totally serious.

I have high hopes that the small presses are going to be the ones lighting our way as we stumble towards a new publishing reality. McSweeney's, Prime, Milkweed, Coffee House, Small Beer and others have all been putting out the books on my own personal years-best list for a while. These are the people preserving the Book in all that it's supposed to me - gorgeous, unabashed, life-affirming, and brave.

I'm heartbroken about Tricycle, but honestly, this is what happens when we expect large conglomerates to do the right thing (hint: they rarely do, and when they do, rarely for very long). I raise my glass to the marvelous small publishers, vigorously pushing great books into the world. Long may you prosper!
