I recently suggested to a younger colleague who was hating her job that (perhaps counter-intuitively) rock that hated job as hard as she could. It's hard to give your best to a job that is already sucking you dry, but doing a great job at it gives you more leverage to get the job you want. Be awesome and let your awesome shine!

Okay it was late in 1997, and they had just opened, but the Hotel Sherazade was amazing and so affordable!

For many years my "retirement plan" involved operating a used book store at the beach. Lately, the beach has been moved to a country outside the US and the book store has become a school (or perhaps just a spare room in my house) for teaching English.

I'd like the Two in a Bowl, but in two bowls, please. And can you make both of the soups crab and corn chowder?

I'm old enough to remember when this song was new. I was young then, but I listened intently to pop songs to learn about what grown up life was like. At the time I remember thinking, "man, grown up love is tough". Now, it's that line about his mom brings on the tears. It is a heartbreaking thing to comfort your mom when your dad dies. I take that shit seriously now.

I love Muriel Spark. When I was rereading "Loitering with Intent", I realized why. It had to do with the way that Fleur embraced her annoyance and even hatred of other people.
