All the Pretty Horses. Because I was 9 and my parents had read it and knew that it was, in fact, not about ponies in the way I thought it was.

But my parents weren't at all familiar with fantasy, so when I read Mists of Avalon when I was 10, they were only horrified years later, when I told them the kind of shit that went down in that book.

I know this isn't the point here, but...

strawberry goat cheese honey toasts sound incredible.

Is this a thing you made up? Recipe somewhere? <3

I think maybe the goat wanted to play too? And maybe goat play and doggie play were just a little incompatible? They found Murphy FASCINATING. But yes. Murph was for sure communicating what he wanted loud and clear and wiggly.

I'm so very sorry, Nikki. Pets are so worth the pain when they're gone, but that's for sure hard to remember at the time. It sounds like you and your family helped give Eliza a wonderful life.

I adopted my dog Murphy when he was a puppy. He loves life (and running) more than any creature I've ever met. He is a constant reminder - when I'm stressed, care too much about what other people think, feel like things are just too hard - that things are pretty awesome, and hey, can you take me for a walk?

This photo captures my dog's personality better than I could ever describe it:

He is also convinced that every living thing is or will be his friend. Creatures he has tried to make friends with include: a live seal, a dead elephant seal, a coyote, and this gang of goats. This is from the time that he tried to make friends with some goats who were wandering through a park. He got head butted shortly after this photo was taken:

This spring, I got an acceptance FIVE YEARS after I submitted. Unusual, but apparently not impossible.

Edit: In response to Amphora. Still don't understand why it does this :(

The only time I ever got detention in middle/high school was when I was caught copying out a map from a fantasy book I was reading instead of paying attention in "Reading" class. This comment both to prove Mallory's point about the allure of good maps and, incidentally, to explain my lack of friends during said middle school.

I would really love a "best of" list of "Women Being Pestered by Cherubs in Western Art History"

This is exactly the kind of article I love reading on The Toast, gut-wrenchingly sad imagining of a sequel to a beloved movie included. Thank you!!
