Ha! Same thing happened to me back in my teaching days. I returned some graded papers and was met with some very disappointed-looking stares. After someone explained what the problem was, I had to go and ○ everything by hand...

Was it 「鉄鍋のジャン!」 I friggin loved that manga.

If you ever want to pound yourself over the head with a manga, try reading AKIRA in Japanese. That thing uses kanji for *everything*, as in even どこまで? written as 何処迄?I learned a lot from that series.

That's exactly it, Paul. Original title よつばと was rendered as YOTSUBA&! per licensor request (seem to recall there was a translator note about it in the English version), with the with/と part rendered via ampersand.

A battery charger would be 充電器, but 充電 by itself means your friend is concerned about being able to charge something, probably his phone or laptop, which makes sense if he's taking an extended bus trip.
