I'm in the military myself, and I see this a LOT. People in the military, men AND women, are pretty much required to maintain weight and fitness standards to advance in their careers. Their spouses tend not to be as fit, and look much more "average". After their service is over, most of these attractive and fit soldiers start to look more average as well.

My point is, you can't always tell if someone is douchey, or shallow, by their outside appearance. There's also a really high concentration of nerds-who-look-like-jocks in the service!

And don't forget hygiene. But what's a little bad breath and unwashed genitals between friends-with-benefits?

Cite source? Of my personal sexual experiences?

Ok, I'll have my husband email you an affidavit right away.

How about YOU cite source that people gradually have more and more boring, unsatisfying sex the older they get? Especially if they have kids? And TV doesn't count as a "source".

"no, we had sex, she wasn't inappropriate at all. You'll understand that once you'll have that experience."

And WOW, how condescending is your friend?!

For sure. It's just one of the pitfalls of getting to know people, unfortunately.

For me, training myself to look for red flags, behaviors and certain phrases can help me suss out whether someone might suck. But it's not foolproof.

And then, one person's suck is another person's acceptable. For instance, a friend of your mom's who loves to gossip and kvetch might love her critical side.

I've got 2 friends: one is super-kind, serious, gentle and non-sarcastic. The other is loud, hilarious, snarky and incredibly foul-mouthed. Each of them wonders what I see in the other (they don't hang out, but sometimes see each other's stuff though mutual Facebook). But I like them both. They don't like each other. That's ok.

But people have different facets, and good AND bad sides to them. This doesn't mean any one side is fake. Like your mom. She is BOTH caring AND critical.

Some people are also more insecure than others, and feel like they CAN'T be themselves in a group, like your friend.

And you aren't any exception, Moose. I'm 100% positive you also have different facets too. Even the fact that we're communicating solely online means that parts of you are omitted from my sight, like your body language and tone of voice.

And also Romans no longer exist as they did in antiquity? But nice try, there.

Haha, yes! You couldn't PAY me enough money to go back to "sex at 20". Sure, my stomach was flatter, but I hardly ever had orgasms at that age!

Yeah, a while back, I remember him thinking it was utterly disgusting that my husband and I enjoy an active sex life, despite having a child. According to him, we were supposed to be settling into a boring rut as we devoted all our energies to our son. Sex was supposed to be on the decline, in his mind, instead of getting better every year (the reality).

It's a very...teenagery perspective. Anyone over 30 is sooo over the hill! Parents fucking is GROSS, man!

But if that story is true, he was saving himself. Therefore, his celibacy was his choice and thus, voluntary.
