At least using the Spearhead detachment I can take Hellblasters instead of Intercessors. Army full of plasma guns? Me likey.

I can't really be called a competitive player. Malifaux is my main game, and even there I lose far more often than I win. That said, I like Space Marine Terminators, and Calgar's Terminator form, so in 40k I make use of Vanguard detachments in order to play the Ultramarines First Company. Basically only models from the HQ and Elite section, usually Terminators and Dreadnoughts, sometimes Command Squads/Biker Command Squads, Sternguard, and Vanguard.

The 8th edition rules make it possible to play an army that I like.

What might improve 40k is switching to objective based scoring only, with scoring counting at the end of each turn, as it is in Malifaux. Tabling your opponent might prevent them scoring, but it won't win you the game unless you can also achieve your objectives.

I was just thinking that myself.

So they've brought chainfists down to 14 points from 22? That is a good move, as it was about 8 points overcosted (with power fists being 12). Now I need to make a Cataphractii squad with 5 chainfists.

Also the fact there are so many varieties makes the idea of a successful netlist less likely.

That makes sense. If you surround them they can't get away.

Lord of the Rings played it the same way.

All the Warzone models I'm putting together now are going to be on 30/40/50mm lipped bases. Squads on 30mm, Individuals on 40mm, and larger models on 50mm. That's how Prodos do it with their new version, although I intend to play them with a dumbed down version of version 1 rules, although adopting things like opposed duels for shooting and combat (roll a D20 add your MW or CC ability, they roll a D20 and add their MW or CC ability, and if you beat their score then you get to roll against their armour value using your weapon strength) from Malifaux.*

Warzone was a great, characterful, little game, but it had far more rules complexity than you want in a tabletop game.

*One of the features I like from both 40k and Malifaux is that you don't just sit there passively while your opponent rolls their dice (or flips cards) to remove your models. You get to make your armour saves, or flip and cheat to save your models. Incorporating the opposed duels into Warzone means that removing models isn't just one player rolling under their MW score then beating the armour value. Even the most skilled attacker could roll a 1 (auto failure) even the most incompetent defender might roll a 20 (auto success). It shouldn't slow the game down either.

If I had to rule it, not that I know what the rules are going to be, all deep-strike armies can start off the board, but they have to take the first turn, and they have to deepstrike half their army in that first turn. Leaving your opponents with nothing to do for one turn out of the five or six that we're given is a bit rude.

Of course then there's games where both sides are deep-strike only. That would be more tricky.

The rest of the rules look good, but this part I'm not too sure about. With pre-measuring and the like, random charges do reduce the "point and click" nature of assault, but then we don't have to roll random ranges with our shooting. Overwatch... if it is just on a 6 it's tolerable, but there are a lot of units that modify that roll to the point where it's more reliable than melee attacks.

We'll wait and see.

Foul evil Xenos, I hates them, I hates them precious.
