It's super easy. Corn starch + water + food coloring if you want. Add the water gradually, stirring all the while until it's soupy.

Small steps are fine, e.g. "more discerning about [thrift store button-downs]". I have had to train myself not to buy sweaters unless they actually fit, because I love sweaters and am so used to clothes not fitting right that I stopped noticing. It means I have a lot fewer sweaters, which is sad, but I also spend less time looking like either an afghan or somebody playing dress-up with their younger sibling's clothing.
