But the rest of her stuff is just so milquetoast, it's hard to even listen to.
I think her break from the industry came at a time when the Jill Scotts and Erykah Badus were incorporating more "real life" issues into their lyrics, while still finding ways to be uplifting and inspirational when they want to.
By comparison it leaves India.Arie seeming sorta fluffy and inconsequential.
At least from where I sit.

I know why they teach it in high school, because it's loaded with literary allusions and symbolism -- but it's a story that's wasted on teenagers who can't possibly know anything of lost dreams, feeling trapped in your chosen life, and the memories of love lost that make you want to do literally anything you can to go back and change the past so that it works out right this time.
Even if it's just my opinion speaking here -- it's really worth a revisit.
