Also, now that I'm here, I would like to note that Lady Gaga's Sound of Music medley made both my parents tear up so that was adorable to watch (granted, they're very susceptible to being impressed by her because her stylist is a dude I went to high school with but still).I have actually never seen the movie or even the horrible live version on NBC so I had no thoughts other than Julie Andrews is lovely.

Jesus Christ. I mean, I'm training in a pretty relaxed hospital with direct integration of midwives in labor management, but every single one of these made me want to cry/barf. Women die, y'all.

Also, my husband is really, really into exploring the outdoors in ways that I feel are perhaps unsafe, but luckily his claustrophobia prevents him from getting really into diving/caving. To further encourage this my sister bought him a book about people dying during cave diving excursions last Christmas. She is a treasure.
P.S. Have we already discussed the Texas Monthly article about the bank robbers? Because that was BANANAS. http://www.texasmonthly.com/story/the-family-that...

It's very hard to understand how incredibly bizarre and incredible Terlingua is until you actually see it, just because it truly is a tiny community that sprung up in the desert around an old mining ghost town. Everyone there has been completely lovely to my husband and me everytime we've gone out there, but there is definitely a "type" of person who chooses to make their home in such a place. For example, a man from Terlingua once described to me his plans to turn his ranch into a home for young girls, so that he could "raise them up right" and train them in "the right kind of skills." He was very adamant that no young men be allowed on his ranch, because they were corrupting influences and might impregnate the young girls before he could. So. It's a weird place.

Also, most of my sister's and my childhood memories from ages 9-15 were sitting around picking up nails or whatever while my parents literally taught themselves how to build our new house. Granted, we all had to get a few extra tetanus shots but overall, it was really fun and there are SO many home improvement/design projects that parents can both teach themselves easily and do with their kids!
UGH this dude just doesn't want to bother to see how he can contribute to make sure SHE isn't a grump/miserable.

Then again, recent lawsuits involving this school district involve a forced public outing of a girl and her softball teammate and then some desegregation issues so it's not like they are in any way a model of how to run a school district.

The best/worst part is that the owner was so distraught and kept reassuring everyone Muffin was totally harmless and to please not shoot it. When they found Muffin the newspaper published a reunion photo and it was obvious the owner was so happy he was near tears.

This has nothing to do with public schools, but I noticed the bookstore at Zion National Park only had books about the Mountain Meadows massacre written by active members of the Mormon church, which kind of seems like a conflict of interest.
