I've never been in such an argument where I had to defend why I am atheist, because I don't see the point in bringing it up.

But if we're treating this go-to argument as the can of mace you whip out if someone tries to rob you, then the problem of evil seems sufficient to ward off any attackers.

Even given the defense that God endowed humans with free will, such that God isn't responsible for evil acts people commit, such as say, robbing someone, that still leaves all the needless suffering caused by natural disasters to be accounted for.

All of these Republican candidates are doing is participating in a neoconservative circle-jerk of the same bad ideas. Each one is trying to outdo the next in making statements of political and Christian extremism to attract media attention. It's an arms-race of nuclear stupidity.

I have a feeling that most people only read the very beginning of your comment and moved on. I completely agree with your point of view on the setting the bar on torture a bit low for the 17 year old in question. Being dragged to church once a week hardly counts as torture in my book. What you describe, being beaten, being hated, and learning to hate others, qualifies as real torture that should be talked about in atheist circles. The above comment actually has something to say on the issue of religion being used to inflict child abuse.

I repeat, having to sit through church every weekend does not even begin to approach torture on the slightest level.

Yeah, and how many atheists have read "On The Origin of Species" from cover to cover, yet invoke evolutionary science at every turn without truly understanding its complexities and ramifications?

I agree. Sarcasm and ad hominem attacks on other people/s beliefs are pretty much futile, in my opinion.

Doesn't individual liberty include the right for women to choose what to do with their own body? Granted, I understand, and somewhat agree with what the point of this article, but I would like to know the actual cost of the IOM mandate to those institutions that consider abortion "morally objectionable."

What if someone finds the use of other types of medical care to be "morally objectionable?" Does that mean HHS should scrap those procedures from being covered as well?

I fail to see what a belief in God has to do with having a conscience.

I totally agree with what you've said here. I've just been thinking the same thing, and the way you systematically debunk the importance of labels is a somewhat of a godsend to me , no pun intended.
