I loved this book, but can't remember an annoying VP. Not sure if that means I liked him or loved to hate him. I'll have to re-read it at some point!

I wish we could go back to the way things were a few years ago, but I know this isn't possible and welcome any efforts to rebuild that community. Good luck with your new venture!

Beautiful drawings! I like the last one best too. So interesting to see her capture the fashions of the time. What a wonderful collection to have.

I was one of the first book bloggers to post my 'best of 2010' lists. Why? Because it became the top search term for my blog from about October. The general public want to know which books to buy people for Christmas - it is one of the biggest periods of the year for book buying. The last day of the year is too late for the people to get that perfect Christmas book. I understand peoples frustrations, but I am loving looking through everyones lists now. I like being able to tell my family which books I'd like for Christmas and any list published after Christmas will miss the chance for me to add those books to my Christmas wishlist. I would love it if people produced lists at random points throughout the year as it is amazing how many books are only being highlighted as wonderful now. Of course everyone should do what they want with their blog, but I thought it was important to let people know why it can be a good thing to publish lists early.

It is wonderful to hear what a difference you are making to those animals. I really hope that you decide to share the occasional wonderful book that you find, but agree there is much more to life than blogging. You should be really proud of the work you are doing :-)

Good luck with your project! You have impressive ambitions! I love the fact that you plan to read them in chronological order - that should give your a fantastic insight into the development of the novel. I worry that the rigid scheduling may take some of the fun out of reading, but I guess that depends on your personality. I look forward to following you and seeing which ones you find the most rewarding

What a great selection of books - I want to read them all too! I already have Shantaram ready and waiting. Hopefully I'll get to it at the start of next year. The others sound wonderful too.

I enjoy reading both types, but don't like it when the protagonist becomes too modern. I love the way this post makes me want to read several books - especially Emma Drummond. You make me want to go and get a historical fictin book off the shelf right now!

I've finally started Lonesome Dove and hope that I can catch up with you all soon.

I'm afraid that I'm not loving it so far. It is OK and does have potential, but the characters aren't grabbing me at the moment. I think that there might be too many of them and hope that over the course of the book I'll get to know them a bit better and start to like them.

I didn't like it at all until about 60 pages in, but then Jake turned up and for some reason I liked him straight away. I'm really hoping the plot picks up soon :-)
