Yes. So good. Almost as creepy as the original! "The Yellow Wallpaper" was the first thing I ever enjoyed being creeped out by, and I love when other people love it too.

I've never looked into the protein comparison to other things, but I love toasted wheat germ. I doubt it compares to protein shake mixes, It's got a nice kick of protein, tastes a little nutty in my smoothies, and is made out of things that I know what they are! (Wheat. It's made of wheat, and enriched with vitamins I think.) I like it as an addition to dairy proteins, so I can get more protein without more yogurt. And it's like $5 for a jar at the grocery store.

I love the disclaimer about being physically strong. I hope/expect you'll go into the connection between being mentally strong and being physically strong. Having the strength of will to make your body become physically strong is amazing, and is something that I continually work at--and is not something that's limited to those who want to/can become physically strong. I've gotten more determined, stronger-willed as I've become stronger physically (because of making myself work out) and it's been an awesome, surprising side effect!

For example, I've been running for the last 2 1/2 months or so, training for a 5K and then figuring out where to go from there (run more 5Ks! train for a 10K! cross-training?). I'm still working on my longer-term fitness goals, but I'm doing a training program that I really enjoy. Not the 50 minutes of trying to make my body move in the 90-degree heat index because it's summer in St. Louis, that part is kinda terrible. But when I'm done I have the satisfaction of having accomplished something: I said I was going to run today, and I did. And that helps make me strong enough to get out there and do it again the next time.

When I was in elementary school, I'd tell my classmates improbable things like "I'm moving to Cleveland at the end of the month," just to see if they'd believe me. I got a certain thrill out of lying convincingly enough to be believed. Or maybe just enjoyed teasing them for their gullibility (my alternate realities never lasted long). I don't remember doing this very often, but there's enough emotional memory left to almost get why someone would become a fabulist. I grew out of it, and don't have to build myself up at others' expense anymore, but it was an effective way for an insecure kid to feel better.

(By middle school everyone I knew assumed I was joking anytime I said anything outlandish or odd. The peril of revealing your tall tales! But they were mostly right, so I guess that's fair.)

Beautiful piece, and what a nice dream to dream. I especially love overly-attentive Billy Joel trying to send her home with food like my Jewish grandmother, and Maya Angelou keeping him in line.

This was amazingly written, a beautiful melancholy. I'm sorry for your loss--and the stupid medical difficulties you had to go through to experience it. Thank you for sharing.
