I had day surgery and they wanted me to demonstrate that I could eat and drink before they let me go home. So they brought me a corned-beef sandwich. I seriously considered giving up and staying the night rather than tackle the horrid thing.

A suggestion - would wider use of electric kettles help? The whistling sort were long since consigned to camping holidays over here. Anyway, you should give birth in the UK. Not only has the embargo on eating and drinking been lifted; not only do women in labour get brought tea, but they brought tea for my husband too. Which he nobly drank even though they'd put milk in it, which he abhors. Oh, and the childbirth and the tea are free.
