Only an adopted Brit here, but 'guv' doesn't really ring the same way to me. It's usually meant more or less respectfully, or at least, not as a secret insult.

The framing of this suggests that gothic and fantastical impulses aren't normal interests of 12-year-old girls. I feel like the author must not know a lot of 12-year-old girls.
