You're more polite than I am. If I get "Sir," even when my clothing is femme-ish that day, I misgender them right back. "Here's your X, ma'am," I tell the portly 45 year old man, with a smile. It isn't nice, but it takes no time to look, and just a bit of a clue to learn not everyone needs to be labeled. Of course, if some dude calls me "sweetheart," I "honeybunch" him right back, so maybe I'm just generally salty.

Ichabod's mad language skillz (nerd peeps, represent!) are half the reason I watch the show, Mills sister badassery being the other half.
