There's some pretty good Dark is Rising fanfic which usually takes place long after the series has ended. I really liked one where Jane's troubled by dreams about the Dark, years later.
Ah, that might be more of an explanation!
I think this is why learning a second language after acquisition of a first language is tricky: you're always trying to put thoughts formulated in the first language into the second, and often it doesn't work like that. You actually have different emotions and expressions in different languages, and they even affect how one sees and describes the world - some languages don't distinguish between grey and blue, for instance, or others distinguish light blue from dark blue with completely different colour names (and so on).
That's really interesting, because nowadays it's thought that speaking two languages actually helps academic performance. Kids educated at Gaelscoils in Eire (dual Irish Gaelic and English) do better in exams and end up performing better than those educated only in English-speaking schools, apparently.
Totally Wimsey hands, but maybe too tall?
I watched THE REPLACEMENTS last night after reading these comments, and it was FAB. So, many thanks for the rec!
Oh, I feel this, though not because I do much outdoor activity. I work on the fringes of construction, and personal protective equipment is routinely sized for men - safety boots, gloves, high-visibility jackets and trousers, overalls, and so on. Transport for London have recently developed their own line of PPE for women, but it says something that they had to do it themselves. I would love a winter high-vis jacket which actually fitted.
Isn't that a Toast original?
I have a theory that if you don't spend longer than three days in the new timezone, you don't get jet-lagged (you might be tired, though). It's once your body has adjusted to the new time that the jet-lag kicks in on flying back. I base this on doing a UK-Vietnam round trip via Thailand over four days, and commuting to Mexico from the UK for three weeks (fly out Monday, fly back Thursday night).
My strategy is to stay awake as long as possible once you've arrived, and not to nap. Go to bed at a reasonable time for the time zone you're in; don't expect to have a full night's sleep.
Ah, I always preferred Innath - he seemed like he had a sense of humour...
