I am never on top of acquiring highly sought after things but I got a tote, HOORAY. i put down my nursing infant daughter for a sec to go find my wallet and complete the purchase...either I'm horrible or she'll appreciate this when she's older.

Ugh I saw this! I would cringe so hard if someone asked me questions like that on a first date. To me it's invasive and presumptuous to just jump into "what's the most in love you've ever felt?" There is a space between "soul-crushing small talk" and deep dives into your past loves, for christ's sake.

I say go! I had the chance to go to a ball in Vienna, waltzing and all, and it was a fun experience... All the women there were wearing gowns, but I'm not familiar with "smoking" attire so maybe it's different.
But I know what you mean. I feel mildly embarrassed bringing up the ball in conversation-- like I have to immediately downplay it.

Wow, this is amazing! I kind of feel like this is what Ignatius J. Reilly would sound like as a food critic. But maybe that's just because I'm at the part where she describes being "partially flayed" by a piece of metal sticking out of the wall.

I think I saw that! It was cute. I think they all end up saving a baby in a runaway stroller.

Yea, the safety issues are definitely important!

That's very true. I get why some parents attach themselves to certain methods and get critical and judgmental if they see someone doing it a different way. It's scary being responsible for a tiny human, and you want to feel like you're doing it exactly right all the time and you are capable of keeping your kid 100% safe--which doesn't leave a lot of room for considering that different approaches are possible. But yea the competitiveness and the sort of slotting oneself into certain identities based on parenting practices (cloth diapering, babywearing) is irritating to me. However I'm also kind of hoping an anthropologist somewhere is like, analyzing the shit out of Babycenter forums, haha.

I love how serious all those babywearing et al. forums get. Who knew that people could develop such strong feelings about the way you strap your baby to your person, or do any number of baby-related things.
