Exciting developments, Natalia. The MFA program is sure to be awesome with you onboard!

I'll be at the TFB on Saturday - are you going just for pleasure? Or will you be on one of the panels? I'll say hello if I see you (it's usually a mob). Hope to run into you. It would be great to meet you in person!

So true, Natalia. Jeeze, I can hardly believe Graywolf press' list was all guys - what are they thinking? That cuts out half the population of the planet!
Good post.

I've been thinking about, and bothered by, something very like this in the English language, Natalia, so your post about the Spanish really interests me. As you know, being bilingual, in English we are obliged to say 'he' if the gender of a person is not known. It's a given that we also refer to all peoples as 'mankind', though clearly half of us are not men. Words evolve from thought, so what does this say about how those who came before us thought? And why do we still follow these customs of speech, though we now know better? It's not enough to say it's habit, or the way it's always been done. Our speech needs to evolve along with our greater understanding.
And for that matter - why do we still adopt our husband's last name when we marry?
Like you, I am not bitter or angry. But I am happy to see changes and greater awareness.

Yeah, sneaking that tag in kinda ruins it for me, as well: Chick lit vs Lit chicks; 'seriously' going for inflammatory there: you called it.
That graph (the circles) got my ire up a bit...

Personally, I value my copy of Bridget Jones just as much as my copy of Bring Up the Bodies. They're different, but both good, each in their own way. I read one when I want to laugh and feel good, the other when I want to enjoy beautiful language. I hardly ever read male writers anymore, though when a good novel by a guy is recommended by someone I trust, I'll give t a try.
Good, outspoken post, Natalia. Never lose your fire!

I like that last truth the best. "When you acknowledge someone is coming from a different place than you, don’t let that cloud your vision of all the ways you’re the same." Right on, Natalia.

This post is so inspirational for me – I need to brainstorm questions and answers about my new characters, and you’ve made me look forward to doing just that! There’s something magic about writing at 5am, isn’t there? Glad to hear the new novel is coming along and ‘clicking’. There’s no feeling like it.
