Thank you again, Meredith. I've really enjoyed these commentaries, and it was fun to visit our friends again and watch them make the same dumb mistakes and sublime decisions. Shout out to all the other folks who've been commenting on this second run. It's been awesome reading your interpretations and thoughts on the plot and characters!

Looking forward to Perfect Tides and whatever lies beyond. All the best to you and your family!

I guess I'm a terrible person but I don't want them to make it. I want Hanna to find someone who is actually right for her, and the same for Marek. It is OKAY to not spend your entire life with your first true love*. I always read this as Hanna and Marek starting the extremely awkward process of moving on to just being friends. It takes a while and no, it's never quite as tight a bond as it once was, but it's a perfectly acceptable kind of relationship to have with someone who you like very much, but who is not quite right for you.

*it's also totally OKAY to do so, if it's actually the right fit - here, it is not

The colors here are so, so gorgeous but they make me think it's either sunset or dawn (they feel more sunset-y to me), but in a few panels it's definitely the middle of the night. I guess this part of Brooklyn just has really pretty streetlights!

"In the middle of a huge party" is definitely not the time for sober consideration. Jane's got it right, here!

This is tied with every other Jane/Marigold interaction for my favorite Jane/Marigold interaction ... :D

I read it as "Marigold's pretending she's not there to keep things civil and also as a bit of a 'fuck you, I don't need you,' Jane sees her but doesn't really have any reason or desire to break off from the group (it's not like she and Hanna are close, and it'd be a minor betrayal toward Mar), and Don has no investment whatsoever and doesn't really even realize she's there."

So, here's how I interpreted this the first time through: this is Hanna confronting the "nothing" she purported to want (in song, no less) in the scene just before she takes up running, finding that said nothing is absolutely terrifying, and rejecting it. Yes, she goes on to put on a brave face, but those aren't really the panels that matter. That's the aftermath. The two panels right before it, the sniffle and the sigh, are where the real growth happens.

Hanna's not Okay. Okay with a capital "O" is a journey that goes beyond this series. But I feel like she's taken an important step in that direction.

Jackie was Jacob before she transitioned.

edit to add: and for what it's worth, I didn't figure that out until a bunch of commenters pointed it out during the original run, so you're not alone.

Agree that Hanna's behavior here is totally defensible. Will's being useless and then, when called on it, acts like a dick. Over the course of about five or six pages, Hanna takes several metaphorical punches to the face. Marek, Will, Marigold and Jane … that she holds some responsibility for the situations that led to some or all of these punches doesn't change that punches hurt.
