This looks so much fun. Guiding trips have come on leaps and bounds since I was a guide!

Stunned was my first reaction, then "It doesn't surprise me parents assume this because people seem obsessed with 'getting paid' these days."

I was involved with Brownies and Guides from an early age, my family were very much involved when we were little and my ex-mother-in-law was a Brown Owl for many, many years, she was even my Brown Owl. It's shocking that parents assume guilders are paid and very shallow minded. I know the work that goes into the "job" and I also know the pressure can be immense. It's so typical of parents today, assuming they're sending their child to a child-minding service. Don't they realise what the child is actually getting out of it?! The phrase "Be Prepared" isn't just two words that someone made up; it means something, something that unpaid guiders are helping young people prepare for their future.

Rant over!

I don't think it's a matter of age really, but of how fit they are. Some people in their 80's are fitter than me in my mid 40's. My mum is almost 70 and she's still very fit. I guess as a parent you have the right to judge for yourself whether you feel the older person is capable of looking after your child. There are lots of questions to ask, i.e. is your child hyper-active, does she/he have a disability, is she shy - so many. It really is a very personal opinion.

It actually amazes me that people can't be accepting of colour, race etc. We are all human beings, we're all built the same (gender type) and therefore we should be accepting of each other. Black, white, muslim, Christian, whatever, it doesn't matter. Or it shouldn't matter.

Some of our ways are different and we can't always agree on each other's opinions. But how can someone slate another human being for the way she dresses? I don't know, just mumbling now I guess, but even though I don't follow a religion and have my own strong views on spirituality, I could never treat someone so differently just because they were a different colour or race.

Don't feel bad, we can't be there all the time and sometimes, if it isn't something too serious, it gives our kids a bit of independence to help themselves. Don't beat yourself up, flower xx

Poor sweetheart. It's so hard watching our children when they're poorly. I really feel for you.
