Position: New York Times bestselling fantasy novelist
Status: Loud and Proud
I was already known as a conservative before I sold my first novel. Luckily for me, I write for Baen, which only cares A. is it good? B. can we sell it? My publisher honestly doesn't care about her author's political beliefs (we've even got a communist), but we are about the only decent sized publishing house that is like that.
I've gotten really used to being mocked for my opinions. I will never be accepted by the self appointed guardians of literature. When I was one of the worldwide finalists for one of the most prestigious awards in fiction, critic's heads exploded.
The majority of novelists toe the group think line or keep their mouths shut. I offend people by having differing opinions, but I've probably picked up 2 sales for every 1 I've lost. The core of my fan base are normal red state America, and I've been financially rewarded for giving them something that they can read without being slapped upside the head with liberal sensibilites every page.
