I say 100% that adolescence is actually the worst time to read Great Expectations. The entire slant of the book is an adult looking back on his childhood. A teenager can't so clearly see both the selfishness and inevitability of that selfishness that Pip has as he fumbles his way to adulthood as does someone else who has made the same journey.

And Miss Havisham and Mrs Joe's experiences as women who aren't saintly about being given a raw deal make SO much more sense as an adult.

I... may have started taking Latin in high school because, on the off-chance I unexpectedly arrived in Medieval Europe, that would probably be the most useful language to know. You know, just in case. (I didn't tell anyone about this.)

I ended up having a lot of fun (the Cambridge Latin books are the best - screw learning how to say "My pants are blue" when you can learn to say "Blood was flowing through the streets" instead) and being pretty good at it, but at this point my grammar has gone to shit and I only remember some nouns and vowels. So the time travel thing had better continue to not happen, since I'm now woefully under-prepared.

I have deeply conflicting feelings about ducks in that I think that they are pretty darn cute BUT also really delicious. I want to both cuddle and eat them.

Was just about to screech on how much I love Hillary Mantel's "Wolf Hall" and "Bring up the Bodies" as historical/biographical fiction, as well as just plain literature. I felt like a kid again reading those books - that what was going on within the pages was so much more engaging and important and consuming than any other part of my life - and as such stayed up waaaay too late several nights, but I can't recommend them enough. Excited for the last book in the trilogy.

Although Thomas Cromwell is still a white dude. Can't have everything.

Everyone should read Ryan North's "To be or not to be" Choose-Your-Own-Adventure Hamlet. Same sense of humor. Excellent. http://www.topatoco.com/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&...

Carrot halwa! Traditional Indian dessert made from shredded carrots with milk (I tend to use coconut milk), sugar, and cardamom. Great to top with craisins (not-so-traditional) or mixed nuts (almonds, cashews, pistaschios). There are deep red carrots that come into season during the winter in northern India that are sweet and gorgeous, but halwa is still pretty tasty with regular carrots. I think you can also use/ add shredded beets, but I haven't eaten one like that.
