Reading and rereading this has been a joy, and one I'll miss very much in these troubled times. I remember reading the comic on a friend's recommendation partway through its original run and just trying to figure out who all the characters were. So glad I stuck with it. Eve's speech is so sweet and perfect. It puts words to how I feel now about all my friends from my late teens and early twenties.

"Some of you loved me before I even knew it, before I could even be convinced.

Now I know."

It's not too much, it's perfect, and I can't imagine a more beautiful way for the comic to go out than it does, pouring out the love in these last two chapters.

I think this is my favorite comic in all of Octopus Pie. And I see it in almost the opposite way.

We've all been where Hanna is in the middle panels, feeling alone and despairing in a way that can't be overcome by reason or will. And she really could have given in to it and gone home! The party would have gone on and Eve would have completely understood the next day. But instead Hanna takes a minute, and reaches for a little of the nothing that she's found through running to eat away at the sadness (once she would have needed weed). Despair turns into sniffle, sigh, brave face, and recovery. And so she goes back in.

I love the composition of panel 2, with blissed-out Hanna and Eve's loving smooch and the neglected work reading. And it's kind of sweet that Will can't maintain his nonchalant joke for more than like a second.

I just want to +1 this whole strip and commentary. Old friends are so good to have and feel like they will last forever. And this is how you make them, a day and an effort at a time.

One time in college, he and Hanna made out and fell asleep in her dorm bed on two separate occasions and that was really confusing for a while.

But I only know this because I can look into the future to see the past; their exact past relationship was unclear on the comic's first run.
