There's a great Marina Warner article in a recent LRB on the forerunners of the Arabian Nights -- the earlier tales were ALL ABOUT how awful and murderin' and adulterin' all women are, and the Arabian Nights are actually walking that back. Whoa.

wait, wasn't part of it built for two-and-four wheeled vehicles and then abandoned by the center polity and only *one* lane of the original maintained by the locals, who used center-wheel barrows which are incredibly efficient? AsyouknowBob given your name?

I read this as mocking hard-meaning-sort-of-consistent-with-modern-physics SF for preening itself on its Realism while ignoring history, sociology, ecology, and often biology.
