In my city, if you ring the police and tell them you are too drunk to drive, they will give you a lift home at no charge. I am not sure about other areas. Perhaps someone can confirm or refute this for elsewhere.

Though I agree it should be a red flag, I think it really depends on the people and what kind of relationship the older person has with the parents.

I met my 'little sister' when she was 11 yrs old and I was 23. She was the daughter of a client and into Egyptian mythology. The client knew I was an enthusiast on all mythology and encouraged us to hang out. She was the only girl out of a family of six children and desperately needed some female company. We have movie nights and sleepovers and home manicure spa days. Years later she was a bridesmaid at my wedding.

She's now heading off to college and we're still BFFs. Now that she's older she has started asking me the awkward questions she'd never ask her mom. Her mother appreciates our relationship because she knows her daughter can (and does) tell me anything, and that I would never let her go through with something that would truly damage her life.

What it really comes down to is if a parent is allowing their young and impressionable child to spend that much time with another person, older or younger, the parents should get to know that person. How else will you have any idea what influence they are on your child's life?
