When I was training to be a Guide Leader, my mentor told me the wise words that "a shouty teacher has a shouty classroom" - and from that week on I stopped shouting at the girls and our stressed, edgy evenings together turned into much more productive, respectful and chilled ones.

I very rarely shout at my kids now (they know that there is something seriously wrong if I do) and your tips are the framework that I kind of work from now - a good stern look and a "I'm very disappointed" can work far more effectively than screaming

When you're shopping look for the specialist food sections - coconut milk is much cheaper in the section with the Indian brand goods than in the section with the jars of curry sauce and more mainstream 'oriental' products. The price difference can be more than £1!

Love the photo of the Spinnaker - definitely on my 'to visit' list. Portsmouth has clearly changed a lot from when I went there as a child to queue for the ferry

Big hugs Otilia - there's nothing like enforced jollity to really rub it when you're not feeling on top form. He's to spring arriving with you soon and some warmth, sun and clarity x

Lots of ideas there Cass! I'm having to work a lot of this half term but am doing trades with friends for childcare and am off to visit friends for a well needed catch up and a brew. The kids will be pleased to see each other and expenditure will be minimal

We keep all our hama beads in one big box but use tweezers to choose the colours that we want - for those of us with slightly shaky hands and still developing fine motor skills, it's made everything so much easier - and great for hand-eye coordination too. We use a version of number 3 for crafty bits - jewels, pom poms etc
