In MindManager Windows I
- select topics and hide them or
- mark them with an icon, filter and hide

They can easily be revealed if required.

I am just about to quote for some training. Unrequited clauses will be hidden and only required clauses will exported to the Word document.

@Robert

iThoughtsHD Is full of (rapidly growing) features and exports to many other mind mapping desktop applications via Dropbox and others. It gives you the option to share your maps with users who do not have your desktop software. But be realistic it won't be a perfect style rendition and each vendor supports a different set of functions.

Others eg iMindMap are really just for their own desktop software

MindMeister works well with its own platform and is compatible with Mindjet

Mindjet's app can share with software that imports their file type but the value is in using their integrated platforms.

Great summary of an increasingky complex market.

I would put iThoughtsHD would further to the right having tried MindMeister, iThoughtsHD and Mindjet. If you are a serious exploiter of the desktop applications the iPad apps are a good notepad and viewer but not for your more complex and styled maps.

Think about how you will be sharing maps via Dropbox, Connect and other cloud storage.

Each application has a different UI so do try before you buy. Some work for some people and some for others. The price point is not significant in the choice of app.

All those perfect mind maps you see have been re-drafted several times.

A map that I have for accessing my businesses financial information was started two years ago has 268 topics, 774 words and 119 hyperlinks. It has had 95 revisions (saving after a period of editing). It will never be perfect. http://ow.ly/3qTWx

A map created as a draft and then edited to produce a good representation of a speech has 129 topics, 433 words, 8 hyperlinks and 29 revisions. I tend to save these maps frequently to reduce my chance of losing the editing. http://ow.ly/3qTMY

I have used MindMeister a few times to create public Wiki maps on subjects like Mind Mapping Software Strengths and Weaknesses. If you do this you must regularly edit the map. I have not for a few months and you can see the result:

Whilst it was managed it was a useful map.

Mindjet Catalyst has been great with teams recording and publishing business events during preparation, collation and publication. The teams have included mind mappers, video, photographers and web designers.

Many of the iMindMap trainers have a CV mind map e.g. http://www.thinkbuzan.com/trainersinfo/cv/andrew_...

Pick a trainer and you may see a link to other profiles. http://www.thinkbuzan.com/uk/trainers

MindManager is a great tool for this. Many years ago I mapped out parts of the Ecademy web site. This enabled me to get to the pages I used quickly and for others to find pages they have never heard off.

They are quick to construct with MindManager, you just drag the favicon in the address bar or a hyperlink on the web page to the map. A topic is created with the title text of the web page as the topic text and a hyperlink.

You can also create maps with hyperlinks from many web sites and show how they are linked by hyperlinks or types.

Some links are no longer valid and some required you to be logged in as me.

A great list Chuck. Another little know tool is the integrated drawing app. It has a good range of tools for doing on the spot sketches and graphics particulalry with Tablet PC.

I hope the general focus on the iPad will not stop iMindMap's next version having ink integration and make even more use of Tablet PC's functions. The Tablet PC was built to draw!

Have used the 5 bottoms on a {rugby} goal post (it was a Kiwi that used that memory picture) with my boardroom meeting maps template for a number of years. It is a very good prompt but you need others like Toni's to drive you down a level e.g. How much? What was it? (that made you think of this). What if you don't? Who do you know? Where has it been done? etc. and So what?

Note to commentators: Log in before to add more than one paragraph of comments. I just lost three!

Interesting: A linchpin is (but more was) something that keeps a wheel on its axle. Now they are used for slowly rotating parts as per there original use on slowly rotating wagon wheels. Your ancestors may have used them Chuck to get you where you are now! I had them on my hover mower keeping the handle on the stub axle on the body.

Back to your proposal: "mind mapping software is an indispensable tool for way finding" No it is not. It is one of many. Take the parallel of navigating at sea or on one the Great Lakes. You have a compass, sextant, chart, tide tables, long and lat tables, scale rulers, logs for determining speed, depth gauges: its the combination of all of these that confirms your position. Some may rely on Sat Nav only but it can be switched off or worst still give you an erroneous message.

Mind Mapping software can be very important to the linchpin, if they know how to use it in combination with other tools. They may or may not present their ideas with it. Talking and sowing seeds can be enough.

Sometimes it is good for the linchpin to break and the wheel to fall off. You stop, assess your situation, redesign maybe, restart and maybe go in a less bumpy direction.
