Hey Marita, Kiva is just amazing - such an inspiring org. Can you link me up to the Charity Navigator list you are talking about. Sounds really interesting!

It sure does - I am hoping to go back next Easter and take my husband and kids for the first time. Can't wait!

It's a great point you make about each org having their own place in a kind of puzzle - I only mention the deets about WV because it's one of the largest and there are often misconceptions about how much $ they spend on advertising and because it's an org I support and therefore know about.

I think so, and I think each organisations have different goals with what they are trying to achieve which then impacts how much $$ they need to raise and how they go about it. I think your sister makes a good point below in saying that they each (well, the reputable ones anyway) have their place in a kind of jigsaw puzzle of aid. WV, though huge isn't everywhere and it doesn't do everything and vice versa. One of my other fave organisations is Operation International which is a focus on micro loans to women and is doing some incredible work in rebuilding communities through raising up women business owners. It's all just so inspiring!

Lovely post, Africa stole my heart many years ago.

Just wanted to share some info about World Vision, who Eden partnered with for this trip. It's obviously a very large aid organisation and it spends 9.4% of it's income on admin and 9.4% on administration leaving 81.2% going direct to communities. Some more information about their financial practices can be found here: http://www.worldvision.com.au/OurWork/WhereTheFun... and some information on charitable giving and overheads generally (not a WV site) is here: http://goodintents.org/choosing-a-charity/overhea... (that last site has some really interesting articles on choosing charities - well worth a read). Also, obviously we saw with the remote locations Eden visited that WV is doing a great job of getting to people who are really in need and changing lives. I am so thankful that there are organisations like this out there, making a difference everyday.

I've got to say that I do not understand at all the concept of Easter gifts. Maybe it's because for me it's a really important faith time for our family, but I can't understand why we need gifts. Isn't the Easter Egg hunt enough? Please help me understand!!!

(genuine question btw - not being snarky AT ALL!)
