Hi I just went to his grave and chatted to his great-great-great grandchildren, Mr Guan Bee, who lived beside this grave. There has been many Hokkien travelling to Brunei Bay before the British comes, and Ong Sum Ping came during the late Yuan Dynasty (end of 14th Century), so it is not related to Ong Sum Ping.

Foo Mah Kang, cames in the mid of Qing Dynasty 道光 empreror (1821-1850, Qing Dynasty turned weak during this empreror). We assumes that he came during 30 years old, being single (it is normal as there are lack of food in Southern China during 1838, and people will get rich suddenly with a boat of trading items, because Chinese item was highly demanded by Europe).

Another possibility is that he came as trader after Labuan was ceded to UK in 1846 (when he was 38 years old). But it is a bit old for him to marry a Tatana woman and had a few children.

According to Mr Guan Bee, Foo Mah Kang knew Chinese characters, therefore were very appreciated by the Brunei Sultan, Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin II. Therefore, a Dato title was given to him as the tax collector in Kuala Penyu. His son, Dato Shahbandar Anjiwa (good in English but weak in Hokkien, studied English in Sarawak, maybe under Brooke administration). Anjiwa protested to NBBC and was listed as a trouble maker in NBBC record (reasonable, less tax could be collected).

I managed to translate the Chinese characters, as below, 福建,妣顯考諱?江傅府君之墓。福建means, he is from Hokkien province. 妣顯考To all male and female ancestors, 諱the name of X江. I could not identify the first letter, the pronounciation is of course "Mah"; the second means "big river" (pronounced as "Kang" in Hokkien). Surname is 傅 (pronounced as "Foo" in Hokkien). 府means family,君 means gentleman. 之墓means, the grave of XXX.

It means, homeland is hokkien. To all male and female ancestors, the name of X江, the grave of the gentleman in 傅family.

This grave was erected on:
On the left: 光緒丙子年。The year of 1876. On the right:孟夏吉旦立。 The early summer (the forth month of Chinese calender), in the auspicious morning.
