I don't think camping is really an important skill to teach anymore. In fact, the whole notion of the scouts was to create the next generation of soldiers. That is reason enough to engage children in different activities. It also sheds a little light on the homophobia, as the scouts is essentially contiguous with the military (which has similar practices).
