I'm a gin girl, too - I was leaning toward a batch of g&ts but this was just the push I needed. Thanks for the suggestions, everyone!

Hi everybody! I just bought tickets to Italy for this November! I plan on staying there with friends for about a week, then ferrying over to Croatia and exploring the coast for about a week. Any recommendations for must-see places in Croatia for a lady taking her first solo international trip? Which cities should I make sure to hit?

God I love this piece. You are a wonderful writer.

"Romantic love doesn’t lessen the opacity of other people’s thoughts and motivations; it heightens it, because the desire to know and inhabit the beloved’s mind is so great. That’s what makes us sick in love, crazy in love. Short experiences of union reinforce that each of us is, once and for all, a single person, alone in a body, known only to the self."

YES.

Thanks everyone!! I loved the stories of your personal journeys.

One of my favorite things about taking up regular exercise is that it's possible to achieve personal bests, like, every day. There's nothing like musing on thoughts like "that is the fastest my body has ever moved in my entire life" to make you feel like a mega-stud.

One thing that I am really enjoying about myself is that for the past 6 weeks or so I have begun exercising with determined regularity....and I have loved it. This is changing something fundamental I always believed about myself ("I am unathletic"), and it makes me feel like the world is opening up as I wonder what else about myself I take for granted that can be challenged, that can be changed.

"But what no book ever tells, what no website ever lists in the symptoms: you will always expect your friend to reappear. There will be days when verbs forget their proper tenses; was will become is. There will be days when you will forget that the contents of that email or the sight of that body. On those days your friend is off somewhere, wherever friends go when they are not with you."

Thank you for articulating so precisely this juxtaposition of the most bizarre and most fundamental aspect of grief. The whole piece was brilliant, but my head is ringing with these words and humming with the truth they hold.

The jealousy - one of the weirdest and most unexpected layer in the onion of grief that was my mom's death. Trivial frustrations with classmates, colleagues, acquaintances turned into complete breakdowns when I realized "AND she/he still has a MOM!"

My mom died when I was 21 - I am so, so sorry for your loss. And for the absence of a carefree, demolished-birthday-cake sort of 22nd year in both of our lives.
