Right, invisibility is the problem. Honestly, I don't think I was ever assigned a book by a non-white author in high school. I can't think of a single one. How depressing is that? You're right; we shouldn't have to seek out diversity because it's built into society -- people are inherently diverse -- yet there are so many voices not present in the sort of "spotlit" resources most people go to for books, so it does become necessary for readers to intentionally seek out the underrepresented voices. I'm looking forward to the day when publishers and reviewers, etc., do a better job of representing already-present diversity. Until then, I'm going to work on doing a better job of working around them to find my own balance.

So I have to admit this post gave me a moment of panic. I just posted a list of 12 short stories I recommend on my own blog, and author diversity wasn't even something I considered. I have a great mix of men and women, but every author I listed is white (I had to look several of them up to check). So I'm backtracking now, asking myself why. Some of it is that many of mine are from "classic" authors, and as we know our society's "classics" are the opposite of diverse. There's really not a good excuse for that. And then most of my other stories came from two different "best of the year" anthologies -- both of which I would have expected to be more diverse... and yet, they weren't. I can't depend on my sources to find diverse stories for me. In 2015 I *am* going to make a more conscious effort to look beyond the front-liner lists to find those other voices so worth reading. That's a great point, a great reminder, and a great goal. Thanks for this, Natalia.

That poem is great, as is the quote -- and the update on your progress. I'm so glad to hear you're in the thick of it. That's a magical place to be. :)

What a cool idea. I wish I had done this earlier to read now, so I guess I should write one now to read later!

Beautiful! I can't say that I do this much, but I do almost the opposite sometimes. I like to fast-draft when I'm really tired for the same reasons. If my mental guard is too worn out to censor, I get this wonderful unimpeded flow that I can edit later. Very nice post!
