Great post, Meghan. I agree with Bane on one thing: a professional FB page is pretty useless.

But social media is where I got my publisher, agent, readers, reviewers, and gigs writing for top magazines. Social media isn't magic. But it's being out and about vs. being home in your basement. Stocking a store full of merchandise doesn't guarantee you'll sell products, but keeping the products in crates in your basement is guaranteed NOT to sell products. :-)

Great advice! I do agree with Sierra Godfrey that a writing blog can segue into an author blog as you break into print. Then you can expand your topics. A beginning writer's blog can work for networking with other writers, and that's an important step in your writing journey.

My heroine is a writer, so I have found readers through my writing blog, but I agree "writing tips" isn't the best choice for most author-bloggers. But they can be incorporated with the other stuff. I'm going to be writing some tips for author-bloggers on my blog on Sunday.

But I agree that most of us fail to plan ahead. I also like the advice to promote each book, no matter what length, with the same zeal. Excellent post, Meghan.

There was this massive twitter response using the hashtag #YesAllWomen. Good overview in the New Yorker here: http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/culture/201...

I'm so impressed with this innovative press! Memoirs are a hard sell in most markets, and I never thought of it before, but many memoirs do seem padded. A memoir needs a story arc like a novel, so it's about a chapter in somebody's life, not a full length biography. The digital age has brought back interest in all shorter forms of narrative, so this is the perfect time for the novella-length memoir.

Also, this weekend's events seem to have brought new attention to feminism, with the death of Maya Angelou and the tragedy in Santa Barbara. Let's hope some of it will take hold and we'll see a resurgence in interest for equality for women and art by women. Brava to you both!

Fascinating, Meghan! It's even rougher than I thought for a creative writing PhD. $17,000 a year isn't going to pay off much student debt. And since it won't help you get published, and you'll need publication to teach anyway....yikes. You gotta really love academia to choose this path.
