Ok this will be the one time when my partner will "get" The Toast humor, he just has to love this!

As he is both a "war gamer" and a Le Carre enthusiast...

You guys, as I was reading this thread my youngest cat Apollo TURNED OFF THE INTERNET. Really. He managed to sit on the power cord switch that the router is plugged into. It went dead just as I was trying to navigate to the Jeeves post.

Oh forgot that when I moved to Egypt in 1998 one of the things I did between actual full time jobs was freelancing for PC World Egypt. I wrote a cover story, a review of the beta version of Windows 98 Arabic. I also taught classes at the US embassy to Egyptian journalists on "Internet research" all about using Boolean logic on altavista and other search engines pre-Google.

I am so much older than I even feel. I really don't remember even knowing what the Internet was until I was living in Saudi Arabia and then Nigeria in the mid 90s. I was on a bunch of Yahoo lists regarding "progressive Islam."

I was anna_in_cairo after I moved to Egypt in 1998. I stayed on all those lists for so many years. We had dialup at home and so I usually did all my internet ting at work.

In 2006 my friends on the Progressive Islam lists helped me leave Egypt with my kids to get away from my abusive husband.

Aside from the Islam stuff, I loved (and still love) cat related stuff. I remember the advent of the Cheezburgr site and the heyday of Cute Overload.

My kids and I remember all your base and other silly memes. My son who was in his early teens when we moved back here in 06, immediately got into a social media thing called vampire freaks. I was horrified by the stuff he did online. I used to hide the computer cords because nothing I did would get him offline.

Then there was MySpace. Then there was Facebook. I used okcupid in 2009 to briefly try to date. I was 41 at the time. Fortunately I met my partner within a month and disabled the profile.

I discovered LibraryThing in 2007, it's still my favorite thing on the Internet.

The Internet saved me in so many ways when I was very socially isolated. I am so grateful.

Ew, I just know it exists because my partner and I went there occasionally for a drink. We had fun a couple of times eavesdropping on the Dr Who trivia game. Sorry the guy that runs it is a jerk...
