I recently found the "Worship Notes for Kids" that you mention and started using it for my daughter (1st grade). It does seem to help her focus a little. I made a similar page for my son, who is 5 but not reading yet, with pictures of a cross, a heart, a bible, praying hands, Jesus, etc. to mark when the words come up, and the entire bottom section devoted to "draw a picture from the lesson".

I think that controlling our thoughts is one of the hardest things we are called on to do, really. Everything starts there, though.

Very interesting. My mom has used the same wooden cutting board for YEARS with no problems.

I also find it ironic how we as Americans are so obsessed with food safety and worried over it - and we have a pretty safe food supply. Recalls and such happen, but not often, and when they do they are the exception. When we eat out, the vast majority of the time we don't have to worry if it will make us sick.

I lived in Ecuador for two years, and in the Peace Corps we were taught that if you couldn't peel a fruit or vegetable, to cook it, or rinse it with bleach water or a special vegetable rinse. If you couldn't do any of that (say, while traveling) don't eat it. It wasn't just an issue of bacteria, but also things like tapeworms. And of course fruit juice was out if you didn't know for sure whether the water was boiled or not. It gave all new meaning for me to the phrase you hear in prayers "Bless this food to the nourishment of our bodies".

I bake potatoes in the microwave. They don't taste as good, but I usually don't think of baking potatoes in the oven far enough ahead of time. I sometimes zap them in the microwave a few minutes and then finish them in the oven, it doesn't take nearly as long that way and they still get the oven-baked taste.

How sad!

BTW - I didn't realize you were from Ohio. I have family in Columbus and Caldwell.

It's very hard for me to understand why/how some Catholic beliefs developed and continue, when Scripture doesn't uphold them at all.

I do think you are not taking into consideration the whole of scripture here. In Corinthians ch. 7, Paul says that "he unmarried woman careth for the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and in spirit: but she that is married careth for the things of the world, how she may please her husband." In the context of the whole chapter, Paul is saying it's usually better to be unmarried, but to prevent sin, some people should marry. I speak as a married woman - I'm one of the ones that really needed to get married, but it isn't the best for everyone. Some women can do more for God single. The important thing is that we place God first, in whatever state we are. That includes the having of children, as well. I do believe too many people see children as a consumer decision, not a life's calling, but the answer is not to bind an application of scripture that does not reflect the whole on everyone, it is for everyone to look at their own life and live it in a way that puts God first.

I agree; we should not push everyone (male or female) to go to college, especially with the debt that it often incurs. I wish I had thought more carefully about the debt I incurred when I went to college, but at that age, it was all very abstract to me.

Consistency is so key, and doing what you say you'll do. If you say "If you do that we're going to the car for a spanking," then you have to do it. If you can't do it, don't say it. I cringe whenever my sister says to my nephew "If you don't do _______, we're going home," because he knows as well as I do that they're not going to pick up an leave from a major family gathering, so he knows he doesn't REALLY have to do what she just said.
