I am confused by this. Doesn't appropriation normally mean an outsider using someone else's oppression for their own ends? Alan Ball, show-runner on True Blood, is gay. Both authors cited wrt the Salem Witch Trials are women.

I'm unsure how urban fantasy is supposed to work if you tying you don't tie your fantastic events to real-world issues. That's kind of the point of the genre. If you only mean you shouldn't trivialize issues for the sake of a story, I agree, but I don't see how some of the examples fit that. For instance, what's wrong with placing a fictional character in the French Resistance? Wouldn't this also rule out historical fiction? Maybe some examples you consider positive would clarify your meaning.
